Unmanned and Unregulated: The Rise of Commercial Drones in the U.S. (Reporter, US-based)

The commercial use of drones is taking off in the United States, and you could be part of a national, multi-disciplinary team reporting on its rise. We’re looking for students to join our team to provide coverage of businesses planning to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and the changing regulations around them.

Over the summer, you’ll produce articles to be published on our website and on partner publications’, such as the Huffington Post. You’ll travel to the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Action Summit in North Dakota, the location of the first FAA-approved commercial drone testing site, and talk to industry leaders about the possibilities and privacy concerns surrounding the technology’s use. You’ll work with a team of five reporters across the country in a virtual newsroom, and may pitch story ideas to an offsite editor.

Requirements:

  • Collaborate with fellow reporters in developing story ideas and sharing resources, expertise.

  • Research businesses planning to operate drones, state legislation, etc.

  • Interview experts in the field, policymakers and drone operators.

  • Participate in webinars and meetings (roughly one a week).

  • Attend the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Action Summit June 24-26 in Grand Forks, ND (travel will be paid).

  • Produce three feature-length articles on an aspect of drone operation in the US.

  • Bylined articles published online on the Student Reporter website and partners’ sites

  •  A stipend of $500(U.S.) and possible travel.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a higher-education program. All majors can apply.

  • Have excellent writing and communication skills, with a strong sense of curiosity

  • Demonstrated interest in journalism, technology/aeronautics, and/or politics

  • Online journalism experience is a plus.
