Tall and slim, with dark, messy hair, and a big smile, the Secretary for the Green Party of Switzerland, Pascal Renaud, gives a politician’s perspective on what is happening and what is needed next as far as mobilizing Swiss people to be more green.

According to Renaud, in Switzerland fifty percent of all the waste is recycled, however, people should now think about reducing their footprint by not consuming more resources. In order for this to happen, Renaud says circular economy should be broken down into something tangible for people.

“In my consumption theory, I want to have fair trade, I want to have organic stuff, because I know behind this is rights protections, and not only how much it costs”, he states as he explains what material his pants are made of.

As part of a free society, lifestyle change cannot be forced. Green economy needs to be promoted by policies, Renaud says, but also by convincing people to think about their clothes, their food, their computer, and to avoid waste.

Now, in Pascal’s opinion, what are the steps to make sustainability mainstream?

“You need to be an example yourself”, he states as a first step, “so don’t tell people what to do, they won’t like it.”

As a second step, spreading the word is important to him. “Most of the difference comes by talking about the cause. Try to make it more sexy.”

And, even though making environmental talk “sexy”, fun, and positive is necessary, making it available is also one of his recommendations. “You can introduce organic food and fair trade in universities.”
